Standardized testing is not an accurate measure of a student’s knowledge of content and it is certainly not an accurate measure of a teacher’s performance. It is a one-size-fits-all approach to education and children are so unique that a pass/fail standardized test will NEVER accurately measure a teacher’s performance. The standardized tests only measure left brain capabilities and never even touch upon right brain capabilities. With children who have different strengths and learning development it will NEVER be an accurate way to measure a teacher’s performance. All standardized testing does is pat some students on the back for having the right skills and content knowledge that was on the test, beat up students who do not have the right skills and content knowledge at the time they were tested, produce a nice tidy report on a politician’s desk, and line the pocket books of test generating companies. Standardized testing is the perfect example of why non-educators should not be making driving decisions about education. Students are not a bunch of parts to be factory assembled as they move down our assembly line of our country’s educational structure. We need to give them the credit for being way more complex than that. Standardized testing will NEVER achieve that, so we need to stop evaluating our teachers with the testing results and free them up to teach what kids need, when they need it.
